Why Would A Nurse Start Her Own Nursing Business?

So why would a nurse start her or his own business? Nurses must make good money, right?

Why leave a perfectly good paying job with benefits, a retirement plan,  to start up your own nursing business?

Why take the  risk of losing these great perks just  to work from home or be your own boss? Is it really worth it?

I have been asked these question from family and friends over the last several months. They want to know why I don’t want to stay at the bedside and do what nurses do, isn’t that why you went into nursing , to help people not to be a business woman?

Well yes and no.

It’s funny how people have a misconception about what nurses do or don’t do.

Just because you don’t work at the bedside doesn’t mean you are not a nurse, it just means you have taken a non traditional role as a nurse.

It’s nurses  who are writing software programs that we use in our every day charting and it’[s nurse who help lobby for our rights as well as patient’s rights and it’s nurses who educate the public on health issues and concerns.

Nursing does not have to be about working in a hospital or nursing home or even home health, it’s about making a difference in whatever career path you choose whether that be traditional or non traditional nursing. We can all be great nurses no matter what we are doing. as long as we are practicing within the scope of nursing.

That’s the beauty of being a nurse, you have a diverse expertise in many different areas and you have business sense that you didn’t even know you had.

You know how to plan, implement, assess and evaluate, this is what you do when putting a plan of care together for your patients, it’s no different with business.

The same principals apply to business just in a slightly different way.

I have always wanted to be a nurse but early on in my career I found I wanted more out of nursing then just working at the bedside. I knew I could make  a difference in someone life by doing other things besides working in a hospital.

The hospital is a great place to get experience but it’s not for every nurse and it’s not the only thing that nurses can do.

It is probably why I have worked in Home Health for 12 yrs now. It has given me independence to work from home, not actually being my own boss but I do have the privilege of making my own decisions that help my patients live a better and healthier life.

I am now getting ready to make that transition from part time home health care nurse to full time entrepreneur and I can hardly wait.

I know it won’t be easy but I feel I am ready to make that move and now feels like the right time.  I have been working online for 4 years now (selling on eBay) so sales and marketing are not new to me. Everything I have been doing up until now has been preparing me for this moment.

I no longer enjoy what I do at the bedside. Don ‘t get me wrong, I love my patients and doing patient care but I no longer like working for someone else. I don’t like how their system works, I feel I can do better by doing something different.

So this is why I want to leave bedside nursing and move onto my own nursing business. I have big ideals and a need to be more creative with a strong desire to put my own systems in place and answer to no one but me and my clients (who will always come first.)

I have been given the opportunity to become a wellness coach, this is where my passion is now and what I have been working on for the last several months. It’s still a work in progress and I hope to be up and running by the fall. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for stopping by, I just wanted to share my thoughts with you, feel free to comment below, I’d love to hear from you.
