Great Business Ideas for Nurses

In my last post I talked about the 4 steps to take when staring your nursing business. Now I’m going to take that first step and explain things in more detail because I found this step to be the most important. Let me help you get started in your journey of turning your idea into a nursing business?

All great businesses have started this way but what if you don’t have an idea yet.

If you don’t yet have an idea here are a few questions to ask yourself to get you started.

  • What do you like to do?
  • Is there a nursing specialty that you’re doing now or is there one you’ve always wanted to do?
  • What are you good at?
  • Do you have any technical skills?
  • What do others say you’re good at?

Is this giving you some  ideas?  Good, now starts the fun part of researching that idea.I have done tons of research in the past year so let me share with you some of the ways of finding the information you need to move on through the next phase of starting a business.

How do you do research you ask?

There’s many ways to do research but I’m just going to touch on the places that I find helpful to me.

The best place to start is online. Type in your idea  and see what pops up.

For example, if you type in Legal Nurse Consultant you will see the most popular sites are the American Association of Legal Nurse
Consultants
and Vickie Mozzila. Both sites will give you great information on what legal Nurse consulting is all about and Vickie Mozzila
has a blog you can follow. She also has written many articles and books on the subject, click here to see on page 3 of Small Business Nurse Recommends store.

Legal Nurse Consulting is easy to find information on.

But what about a business niche that’s not easy to find information on?

For nurses wanting to start a nursing business your research will be different than someone doing research for Affiliate Marketing.  The best place for nurses to look for information is on other nursing sites.

NurseFriendly.com is a nursing directory where there is literally thousands of pages on the topic of nursing. The link above will take you to the Nurse Entrepreneur page where you can scroll down and check out what other nurses are doing in business.

A word of warning about this site, it is huge and seems overwhelming at times but take your time and you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Check out these two web sites from nurses turning their passion into a business.

Patty Wooten teaches and helps health care professionals, patients, caregivers, educators, and business executives, helping them understand how to use humor to improve their working environments — employee relations, client satisfaction, and stress reduction. She’ll make you smile.

Little Boots Publishing
Emphasizes health promotion and safety awareness for children, presenting story books that are fascinating and delightful for children, informative and comprehensive for parents and caregivers, and valuable for professionals. Sarah Cruz, RN owner.

Two very unique businesses that nurses are starting. Look around at the many nursing websites listed, you are allowed to contact these nurses if you want to ask questions. I’m sure they would be willing to help.

So the reason to do this research is to find out if there is a market for what you have to offer. Three very important questions must be answered in order  for you to be successful.

  • Is there a need for your product or service?
  • Can people afford your product or service?
  • Do they want your product or service?

You need to be able to answer yes to these questions because if you have a service or product to offer but people can’t afford it or there is not a need in your area than you will have a very hard time making money.

The only way you are going to know this is if you look at what other nurses are doing. Nothing wrong with some competition, this means there’s a market for your  product or service.

So make sure your clients or target market  are people who need, want and can afford your product or service. If you keep these three things in mind you will start out from the beginning with a successful nursing business.

Two other sites to consider looking into are National Nurses in Business Association and Nurse Entrepreneur Network. Both are paid sites but the Nurse Entrepreneur Network has a forum that allows you to ask questions and you will get your question answered unlike at other nursing forums I’ve seen where questions never get answered.

The cost for a month subscription to the Nurse Entrepreneur Network is only $15. It’s well worth it for the information you will be able to find out.

The National Nurses in Business Association is $99 for a year (you can not join by the month) but they also will provide answer to your questions.

I belong to both sites and have found them very helpful and I highly recommend for any nurse looking for information on starting your own nursing business.

Hope this information helps. Any questions, feel free to comment or contact me.

Until next time, Here’s to your research success!
