Top 5 Reasons to Use Social Bookmarking Sites

For a long time I didn’t understand why you would want to use social bookmarking sites.

I already had a favorites (IE) and Bookmarks (firefox) so why would I need to bookmark a site on these social bookmarking sites. Then I read The Nurse’s Social Media Advantage book, I finally had it explained to me.

Here’s what I have learned :

1. You can bookmark you site and be able to get back to that site from any computer or browser you happen to be using. This is so handy for someone like me that uses a PC and a laptop when I am traveling.

2. It’s also a great place to do research on what’s popular or trending in your niche market. Useful for finding articles about your topic.

3. You can bookmark your favoirte sites with a description or tag. This helps to easily organize you sites and get back to them fast when you need to. That was the biggest problem I was having when using my browsers bookmarking or favorites, I didn’t know what the site was called and I”d waste time trying to find it, sometimes never finding it.

4. Easily send your favorite pages or websites to your friends, family or collegeaues.

5. Score those sites you love with a rating. Give it a score and see how others are scoring your favorite sites.

Now that I understand what social bookmarking sites are and how to use them I’m a big fan.

It’s an easier way to get back to your favorite site using descriptions and tags. This is quick and easy, saving me time and I’m all about saving time.

Try out a social bookmarking site if you haven’t yet and see if it doen’t save you time and possible money, especailly online business owners who need to use their time productively.

Here’s a short list of a few, but I use Delicious because it’s the most popular and the easiest to use. But don’t take my word for it, try them out and find the one that suits you.

Delicious.com

Digg.com

Dingo.com

Remember, if you don’t want to use Social Bookmarking sites you can still use them to search a topic or check on your competitors if you are a business, or see what your friends like and share your favorites with them.

What Web Browser Do You Use?

I didn’t really think much about browsers in my early days online. I actually thought IE (Internet Explorer) was the only one and that all browsers where the same.

I was so wrong.

I started using Firefox last year when this blog got hacked into. The only way I could get back into my site was through Firefox.

Firefox has cool plugins that make getting around or blogging or even for email management, so much easier. It’s also been known as the best in security since it updates on a regular basis (IE does not.)

Once I started using Firefox I didn’t want to go back to IE but I stilled used it for “surfing the web” but than I started having problems viewing video. I knew it wasn’t my computer (I just bought it) so I tried an experiment and switched to Firefox to see if I could view the video and amazingly I had no problems….mmmm, that’s when I stopped using IE altogether.

Now I’m on to using a new browser called Chrome from Google (I’m sure you have heard of it) They claim to be the fastest browser and guess what they are!

I love using Chrome for all the researching I do for healthcare and online business news, it makes getting around so much easier.

I still use Firefox though for my website maintenance, it’s the best when it comes to security but if you want speed than Chrome is the one for you and if you just don’t care than use IE.

Just thought I would share my thoughts on web browsers, so which one do you use?

Here’s the link for Google Chrome, check it out you won’t be disappointed.

Using TweetDeck

TweetDeck is one of my favorite twitter applications because of its ease of use and a short learning curve.

TweetDeck is a free desktop software to help you organize your social media experience. By converging all your social media accounts into a series of columns it is very simple to absorb it all. Twitter, LinkedIn, Buzz, Face book, Foursquare and MySpace can all be managed through the program. The desktop software works on Windows and Mac OSX. Read More…

Managing your Inbox

Opening mailManaging your inbox is a problem for many people. Mine started when I first came online in 2006 selling physical products on eBay. I started subscribing to everyone who had information about working online, particularly selling products on eBay.

I did not have a system in place to deal with emails and it wasn’t long before my in-box had 300 emails waiting to be opened.

Actually, I remember once having over 1,000 unopened emails, How did that happen?

With email being one of the most common ways to communicate it’s important to have a system in place especially if you want to get involved with social media.

Joining social networking sites means more emails so here’s a few suggestions that have worked for me and might help you with managing your inbox: Read More…

The Difference Between Spam and Marketing on Twitter

twitter birdWhen we begin speaking in terms of marketing, invariably the question comes up, are my marketing efforts true marketing efforts or are some viewing them as spam?

Spam is about taking the choice away from someone and delivering them information about products and services without their permission. Spam comes in the way of unsolicited emails, junk mail and telemarketing. Spam leaves a bad taste in our mouths and for good reason.

We have not asked to be inundated with the information that we find floods our in boxes these days.

Marketing when done responsibly can be fun and witty. Commercials that reach us emotionally are effective marketing tools. People who care about their audience take the time to consider their message and how it will reach others.

On Twitter we each have an option as to who we will follow. And one might suggest it is that choice that gives others the right to “spam”

Wrong!

Spam is irresponsible and annoying. More will tune out than tune in.

Take time to consider your message and how it will connect with your followers. Are you sharing a valuable service, product or resource?

Do you take the time to share on a personal level as well as sharing on a business level?

Have you established a relationship with your followers? Is the information you are providing timely and appropriate?

If you can answer these questions with a yes answer then your message can effectively be considered marketing rather than spam.

Your followers will welcome your post rather than turn away from it. Share your tweet with others and in turn respond in kind to their own messages and tweets.

After all, marketing is all about the relationship and spam is about nothing more than the bottom line.

I hate Spam!!!
